“Better than Mounjaro” is the sort of headline that can make you stop scrolling. But better in what way, for whom, and compared with which dose?
I do not think you should need a science degree to ask those questions. They are what make the headline useful.
What was actually compared?
On 21 September 2026, Novo Nordisk announced REIMAGINE-5 results in adults whose type 2 diabetes was not adequately controlled on existing treatment. It compared particular doses over 60 weeks. [1]
CagriSema combines cagrilintide and semaglutide. You may know semaglutide as the active ingredient in Ozempic. Tirzepatide is the medicine marketed as Mounjaro.
With cagrilintide 1 mg plus semaglutide 1 mg, average weight loss was 12.4%. With tirzepatide 5 mg, it was 9.1%. These identify the trial groups, rather than suggesting doses to use. [1]
The company also reported falls in HbA1c, a measure of blood sugar over time, of 1.71 and 1.67 percentage points respectively. For blood sugar, the trial met a test showing CagriSema was not unacceptably worse. That is different from proving it was better. [1]
What does the weight difference tell us?
The gap between 12.4% and 9.1% is 3.3 percentage points. I would keep that specific comparison attached to the result.
This was not a comparison of every dose, or a trial of everyone seeking weight treatment. It cannot rank medicines for people without diabetes or tell an individual woman which option would suit her best.
Could people stay on treatment comfortably?
That is another question I want answered. The announcement described tolerability favourably, but did not provide a detailed table comparing side effects or why people stopped. It cannot tell us which treatment was safer or easier to continue. CagriSema remains investigational. [1]
This is a company announcement, not the full peer-reviewed trial report. Novo Nordisk has a commercial interest. We need the fuller methods and safety results to judge the whole experience.
What I look for in the next headline
I start with three things: exactly who and what were compared; whether the result concerns weight, blood sugar or something else; and whether I am reading a company announcement or a complete research paper.
Those details help me stay curious without turning one result into a universal winner.
